Sunday School, 10:45 - 11:30 am
2 Peter 1:1-11
1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours: 2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. 10 Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Introduction (vv. 5, 7) “Add to,” “Increasing measure”
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
I. “By Christ’s Righteousness"(v. 1)
1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
A. Received
B. “Therefore” (vv. 10-11)
10 Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
C. “The Little Engine That Could” and “Hang In There!”
II. Review
A. The Perseverance of Peter (2 Peter 1:1) …
1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
B. … and ours (Hebrews 12:1-2)
12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
⁻ Heroes of the Faith = Been there, done that.
III. Four areas of perseverance
A. Persevere through difficulties ~ 1 Peter 1:6-7; James 1:3-4
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
B. Persevere in demands
C. Persevere in dollars ~ Luke 16:11; Malachi 3:10
11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust 3 you with true riches?
10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it
D. Persevere in delays ~ Deuteronomy 8:2; Isaiah 64:4
2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
4 Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.
Conclusion/ Application: Hang in There (Isaiah 40:29, 30, 31)
29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.

Mark 9:38-50
Everyone knows what salt is, right? (Hold up the salt shaker.) We use it every day to make our food taste better. Imagine eating a hamburger and French fries without salt. It wouldn’t have much flavor, would it?
But salt has more uses than just making our food taste better. It’s used to make over 14,000 different products, some of which we use every single day.
People have known about the usefulness of salt for many years. A grain of salt may be small, but it’s very valuable. At one time, salt was so important that people were paid with salt instead of money.
Jesus knew the power of salt in our lives. He even used it to tell His followers how He wants us to live. Jesus said, "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other."
We are called to be salt in the world. This means to flavor our world with the love of Jesusevery day and to be led by Him in making the world a better place.
Dear God, help us flavor our world with Your love. Help us make the world a better place. In Jesus' name, Amen.
