“Love Gives Life”

John 6:35-59

35 Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me, and still, you do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." 41 At this, the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 42 They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?" 43"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. 44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Fat her and learns from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." 52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your

forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever." 59He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Communion

Council 2026

Council 2026

Today we will celebrate communion together. It is good to prepare ourselves for the Lord’s Supper. Think about your walk with God. Is there a sin to be confessed? Is the cleansing joy of God’s forgiveness in Christ a reality in your life? Are you, by the power of the Holy Spirit, living your life in Christ and to the glory of God? None of us is perfect, but Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for us and the acceptance of His salvation allow us to respond to His invitation to come to His table. Welcome! (Grape juice is in the inner ring and wine is in the outer rings. Gluten-free bread available.)

Prayer Requests

Remember in prayer

Keep Justin Bochmann in prayer as he made it through his surgery. They removed all the tumors and will continue chemo pills to slow the growth of recurring tumors. He has about six weeks of recovery. Pray that God grants him peace, courage, and full restoration. We lift up Howard Schulz and his family in the loss of their beloved Coni. May God surround them with His comfort, His nearness, and His sustaining peace in this season of grief. We give thanks that Pastor Phil made it through his surgery. Please continue praying for a fast recovery, complete healing, and deep peace as he regains strength. Pray for our Ames Korean CRC Campus Ministry, may it be a lighthouse for young adults, providing them with a firm foundation and the wisdom to walk the right path. Pray for World Renew to continue supporting community development and disaster relief. Prayers go out to the Helfers family, our missionaries in South Africa. May God protect them and bless their ministry as they share His love with the local community. And let us continue to pray earnestly for peace in the Middle East—for a swift end to conflict and for lasting peace to take root in the region.

"Who Needs a Doctor?"

 Matthew 9:12-13

Scripture:

But when He heard this, He said, "Those who are well don't need a doctor, but the sick do. Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners."

Summary of this sermon...

Jesus went to those who needed Him, just like a doctor visits the sick. He changed the life of tax collector Matthew and ate with sinners, saying, "It isn't those that are healthy that need a doctor, it is those that are sick" (Matthew 9:12-13). We all need Jesus because we've all sinned. Let's go to those who need Him and share His love, just like Jesus did.

I’m sure that all of you have seen one of these before. Can anyone tell me what this is? (Pause for response.) That’s right, it’s a stethoscope! Who uses a stethoscope? (Pause for response.) Oftentimes, when we’re sick or not feeling well, we go to the doctor’s office to get checked out. They might use a stethoscope like this one, or they might write you a prescription for some medication.

There was a time when, instead of going to the doctor when you were sick, the doctor would come to you instead. The doctor would carry a little black bag filled with medical supplies and go to the homes of those who were sick.

That's what Jesus did when He was here on earth. He went to where the people were—especially people who were hurting or had problems in their lives. One of the people that Jesus went out and ministered to was a tax collector by the name of Matthew. Tax collectors were hated in Jesus' day because they were often greedy and dishonest.

Jesus changed Matthew's life, and he became one of Jesus' disciples. Here’s what happened.

One day, Jesus went to Matthew's home to eat dinner with him. Many of Matthew's old friends came there to listen to Jesus teach. The religious leaders of the day were very displeased that Jesus was even talking to such people, much less eating with them!

They asked His disciples, "Why does your master eat with these sinners?"

Jesus heard them and answered, "It isn't those that are healthy that need a doctor, it is those that are sick. I did not come to call the righteous. I came to call sinners to repentance." Just like our doctors once did, Jesus went to the homes of the people who needed Him, and He touched them and made them whole.

Who is someone who might need a doctor? (Pause for response.) The sick need a doctor. Is there anyone here who has never been sick? Of course not, so we all need a doctor! Who needs Jesus? (Pause for response.) Everyone does! Is there anyone here who has never sinned? No way! The Bible tells us that "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." That means we all need Jesus. We sometimes sit in our churches and wait for people to come to us so we can tell them about Jesus and His love. Instead, we need to be doing what Jesus did. We should be going where the people are and taking the good news of Jesus to them.

Dear Jesus, help us to be willing to go to those who need You and tell them of Your love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
