Ecclesiastes 3:1-14
3 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: 2a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. 9 What does the worker gain from his toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on men. 11He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. 13 That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil-this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him.

Rolling Acres, thank you for the cards, gifts, and acknowledgement of my graduation. You won't see me this summer as I am spending it with my Dad, but I will be back in the fall to start my journey at La James, and I will see you then.
Next Sunday, we will celebrate communion together. It is good to prepare ourselves for the Lord’s Supper. Think about your walk with God. Is there a sin to be confessed? Is the cleansing joy of God’s forgiveness in Christ a reality in your life? Are you, by the power of the Holy Spirit, living your life in Christ and to the glory of God? None of us is perfect, but Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for us and the acceptance of His salvation allow us to respond to His invitation to come to His table. Welcome! (Grape juice is in the inner ring and wine is in the outer rings. Gluten-free bread available.)

We lift up Howard Schulz and his family in the loss of their beloved Coni. May God surround them with His comfort, His nearness, and His sustaining peace in this season of grief. We give thanks that Pastor Phil made it through his surgery. Please continue praying for a fast recovery, complete healing, and deep peace as he regains strength. Dave Lief is home and recovering well. The pacemaker is functioning exactly as it should. Please continue praying for his healing and for God’s peace, comfort, and strength to surround him in the days ahead. Keep Justin Bochmann in prayer as he prepares for surgery on June 2nd to remove cancer from his knee. He will have about six weeks of recovery afterward. Pray that God grants him peace, courage, and full restoration. Please continue to pray for Al Lewerke as he recovers from surgery. Ask God for a smooth, complication-free healing process and a swift return to strength. Prayers go out to the Klompien family, our missionaries in Nepal. May God protect them and bless their ministry as they share His love with the local community. And let us continue to pray earnestly for peace in the Middle East—for a swift end to conflict and for lasting peace to take root in the region.
Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Jesus gives us the Great Commission to "go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:18-20). Instead of relying on chance, like sending a message in a bottle, we're called to actively share God's love with everyone we meet. We should teach others what Jesus has commanded us, baptizing them in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit's name.
Have you ever read a story or seen a movie about someone putting a message inside a bottle and putting it in the ocean? Perhaps it was someone who had been stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean and put a message in a bottle, hoping that someone would find it and come to rescue him. Maybe it was someone who just wanted to see where the wind and the waves might take the message.
I read a true story about a man named Harold Meyers who went on a cruise in the Caribbean. While on the ship, he took three bottles and placed a message with his name and address and a dollar inside each bottle. The dollar was to pay the postage so that the person who found the message would write to him and tell him where they found it. Next, he put a cork in the bottles, sealed them with wax, and threw them over the side of the ship into the ocean. His friends all teased him, saying that he was just throwing good money into the ocean.
Well, what happened to those bottles is quite amazing. Of those three bottles he threw into the ocean, two were found, and he received a reply from the person who found them. Two out of three! That's amazing!
"To tell you the truth," Mr. Meyers said, "I was shocked. I guess I really never expected to hear from anybody at all."
I was thinking, perhaps that might be a good way to spread the message of Jesus all around the world. We could write John 3:16 on pieces of paper. You know John 3:16, don't you? "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." We could write that on a piece of paper, put it in a bottle, and drop it in the ocean. Then the good news of Jesus would float all around the world.
Does that sound like a good plan to you? Well, to tell the truth, I think that sounds like a pretty foolish plan. I don't think that would get the message of God's love to very many people. What would be a good way to get the good news of God's love to people all around the world? Jesus told his disciples how he wanted it done, and the plan is still just as good today as it was then.
Jesus said, "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Jesus wants us to tell everyone we meet about his love for them and share with them what he has taught us in the Bible. He didn't say, "Send a message in a bottle," he said, "Go and make disciples."
Dear Father, help us to obey the command that you gave us to go and make disciples. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
